ABOUT COLON CLEANSING - COLON HYDROTHERAPY In TAMIL

Health is wealth. As per today’s situation where people lead a busy and sedentary life style, people hardly find time to prepare and consume food at regular intervals. As a result food products like Ready to eat, fast food etc are in market which is in great demand. Intake of such food products leads to ill effects in the body which we have been known through television and newspaper.
As a result of this improper balanced diet, the food does not get digested properly and remains in the end part of the digestive system i.e. colon or large intestine and leads to the formation of diseases like- allergies, arthritis, constipation, diarrhea, headache, skin problems , hemorrhoids, flatulence, recurrent infections of GI tract etc.
During earlier days, grandmothers used to give castor oil to their children or grandchildren who used to suffer from stomach ache and indigestion which the indigested material gets eliminated from the body further relieving the symptoms. This procedure was further carried on once in 3 months to maintain the health of the person. In the same way, in AYURVEDA we have a treatment named VIRECHANA wherein, by this treatment, the indigested, toxic waste material gets eliminated.
Virechana treatment is one among the panchakarma treatment mentioned in Ayurveda . By this treatment we can not only eliminate the toxic indigested material but it also helps in reducing the fat deposition in our body, thus maintaining the health of the person.

Now in Naturopathy, we have a treatment named ‘colon hydrotherapy OR Colon cleansing Treatment ” wherein from this treatment both the healthy and unhealthy persons can be benefited. Colon hydrotherapy being a medical treatment it also helps in maintaining the health of the normal person.

Colon

The colon, or large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive tract (food carrying passageway extending from the mouth to the anus).
The colon is approximately 5 feet long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Its major functions are to eliminate waste and to conserve water. Also, there are bacteria living in the colon which synthesize valuable nutrients such as vitamins “K” and portions of the vitamin “B” complex.

The purpose of having a colonic

Well, waste material, especially that which has remained in the colon for some time, (i.e. impacted faeces , dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucous, parasites, worms, etc.), poses several problems. First this material is quite toxic (poisonous). These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the blood stream making us feel ill, tired or weak. Second, impacted materials impair the colon’s ability to assimilate minerals and bacteria- produced vitamins. And finally, a build-up of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements, constipation, and the result of these disorders.

Colon Hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy is an “internal bath” of the large intestine with warm/cold filtered water – a safe, re-energizing, restorative non-medical procedure. A “colonic” cleansing is one of the most effective ways to get rid of toxic accumulations of bodily waste (which can build up over years), excess mucus, toxic compounds, and gas. It also helps restore colon muscle tone, rebalances intestinal flora, and improves overall health. Improving one’s system of elimination removes the body’s primary source of disease. A healthy, clean colon is essential to a healthy body.
Many people have pre-conceived ideas about Colonic Hydrotherapy and Colonic Irrigation and imagine the worst, whereas it is in fact a colonic treatment which leaves you feeling clean, revitalized and well. It was used in UK hospitals until relatively recently when the cost became uneconomical in face of strong purgatives used before bowel procedures.

The colonic treatment itself exercises and tones the bowel thus aiding the evacuation of waste both during and after treatment. The toxic load on the body is reduced.

The colon, or large intestine/bowel, is an important organ situated at the end of the digestive tract in the abdominal cavity. It is divided into several regions: the appendix (thought to be a vestigial structure, but with rich lymphatic supply), the ascending, the transverse, the descending and the sigmoid colon and the rectum. The anus acts as a valve under voluntary control.

Its functions are to re-absorb digestive juices, water-soluble salts and bile back into the bloodstream and thence to the liver, to store and desiccate food and other bodily wastes prior to elimination, and to house a vast array of beneficial bacteria,. The latter help our immunity to infection, keep high blood cholesterol levels in check produce a number of vitamins, and probably also act in preventing of colon cancer.

The form of the colon is variable: most diagrams show an idealized bowel, whereas the length is variable (between about 3 to 11 feet), and the path it follows can be tortuous, with many loops. For some unfortunate people, where constipation runs in their family, it is likely that they have inherited long bowels making transit time long and slow – just where colon hydrotherapy can help!

The bowel structure is made from smooth muscle which is different to ordinary body muscle inasmuch as it is under autonomic (or automatic) nerve regulation over which we have no conscious control. When working normally, it is expected that the bowel will partially empty (during defecation) at least once every 24 hours. If long or slow, the transit time is increased and constipation occurs, or if fast and disordered, muscle spasm may result which is a feature of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, strangely also accompanied by constipation together with bloating, irregular defecation and incomplete evacuation.

The colon is the main part of the eliminative system of the body, where wastes are excreted from the alimentary tract, the lymphatic system and the bloodstream. It is important to keep

Bowel function regular to prevent the other eliminative organs becoming overworked, and to avoid the effect of toxins building up in the body.

DID YOU KNOW?

20% of the UK population suffers from IBS symptoms at some time during their lives, and 5% are chronic sufferers. It is more prevalent in females. Laxative sales in the UK are multi millions £’s per annum The ideal bowel transit time is less than 24 hours. In adulthood, all our vitamin K needs are provided by our own bowel bacteria. There are more bacteria present in the colon than there are cells that make up our own body. The repercussions of poor bowel function may be seen throughout the body in a wide range of health problems.

Colon hydrotherapy can be helpful for:

. Healthy intestinal maintenance
. Detoxification when fasting
. Improving colon muscle tone
. Sluggish eliminations
. Digestive discomfort (excess gas or bloating)
. Cleaning mucus and plaque buildup
. Lack of energy

What happens during a colon treatment?

The client relaxes comfortably on a massage table as a small sterile, disposable rectal tube or speculum is gently inserted into the anus. The speculum has a separate water line and waste line, that is attached to the hydrotherapy equipment. You are completely covered with a modesty sheet during the entire process, and because this is a closed system there is no offensive smell. No mess, no fuss, no smell.

The therapist then begins a series of gentle infusions of the warm water into the colon, controlling the water temperature and pressure. A digital ounce counter shows amount of water intake and breathing techniques help the client with opening and relaxing the colon. As soon as the client experiences any urgency or fullness, the waste line is opened.

The water, along with old fecal material, gas, mucus, and toxins are released through the waste line and then through the illuminated viewing tube so that the amount and type of waste being eliminated can be thoroughly assessed. The waste is then flushed away through the sewer line.

No special preparation is necessary before your colonic treatment appointment, although large meals and lots of fluids are not advised.

When visiting a registered colon hydro therapist they will expect you to be nervous, but will put you at ease. The first appointment includes taking your case history, explaining the procedure and the treatment itself.

A brief rectal exam must be carried out, then a speculum is introduced 1.5inches (4cm) to open the sphincter. An inlet and outlet tube is attached to the outside of the speculum, so the system is open, with water going in and water and waste out. The waste is piped away.

About 60 liters of filtered water are used per treatment, but only small amounts are allowed to enter the bowel at any one time, acting to dilate the lower bowel, stimulating the bowel to empty itself. In all, about 15 liters enters the bowel during treatment, and the vast majority also comes out again. The water pressure is carefully controlled and is in fact lower than is normally generated during a bowel movement.

At first, water is fed into the lower bowel whilst you are on your left side, then after about 10 minutes your therapist will ask you to turn onto your back, and using gentle massage techniques across the bowel profile, will work around the whole bowel assisting the elimination of waste and gas pockets.

Some herbal infusions may be used during colonic treatment, and a probiotic (friendly bacteria) implant may be given afterwards if indicated.

In all, the colonic treatment takes about 30-45 minutes on the couch.

Is the procedure painful?

Rarely. Sometimes during the procedure the muscles of the colon will contract suddenly, expelling considerable liquid and waste into the rectum and out the tubing. This contraction may feel like cramping or gas with pressure in the rectum. Most of the process is mild and gentle with a wonderful light, empty and clean feeling afterwards.

HOW MANY COLONIC team ARE NECESSARY?

This does depend upon the individual and advice will be given after your first treatment. It may vary from only one treatment to several spread out over a period of time, after which preventative or maintenance team may be recommended.

IS COLONIC IRRIGATION SAFE?

Yes. As a trained therapist-conducted treatment, the insertion is in expert hands, the filtered water is at low pressure and there is no danger of perforation. All equipment used is either disposable or sterilized using hospital -approved sterility or regularly serviced autoclaves, so there is virtually no risk of cross-infection.

Although large numbers of friendly bacteria are expelled during treatment, they quickly breed back up to strength, and the environment after treatment is usually better than before, thus leading to a better balance.

Colonic hydrotherapy, unlike the use of laxatives, enemas or slant boards, is not habit-forming and actually improves the tone of the colon.

ARE THERE CIRCUMSTANCES WHEN COLONIC TREATMENT CANNOT BE PERFORMED?

Yes. Conditions such as active infections, active inflammation (such as diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), a painful fissure or painful hemorrhoids mean treatment cannot be comfortably carried out until they are healed or in remission.

Diseases such as congestive heart disease, severe uncontrolled hypertension, severe anemia, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, severe hemorrhaging and colo-rectal carcinoma are also

Absolute contra-indications for treatment as are some physical conditions such as severe abdominal or inguinal hernias which cannot be easily reduced.

team are also not performed during the first three months of pregnancy, and not at all during complicated pregnancies.

WHY COLON IS SO IMPORTANT?

A good cleansing program should always begin by removing the waste in your colon, the last portion of your food processing chain. If you attempt to clean your liver, blood, or lymph system without first addressing a waste filled colon, the excreted toxins will only get recycled back into your body.

One of the most frequent bowel problems that people experience today is constipation. Constipation is generally attributed to a low fiber diet and lack of sufficient water, which cause our fecal matter to become condensed and Compressed.

A constipated system is one in which the transition, or “time”, of toxic wastes is slow and the consistency of the stool can cause strain (which over time may cause hemorrhoids, varicose veins, hiatus hernia, or other mechanically induced problems). The longer the “transit time”, the longer the toxic waste matter sits in our bowel which allows proteins to putrefy, fats to ramify, and carbohydrates to ferment.

Will one cleansing completely empty the colon?

Almost never. Many of us have several and more pounds of impacted material in our colon. This is hardened, toxic matter and substantial work must be done to remove it. One cleansing removes some, the second more. When you eat a healthy diet with large amounts of vegetables and fruits which holds the moisture in the colon, the colon will cleanse easier and the process will be sped up For most people eating a standard American diet I recommend six to ten colon team fairly close together to receive a thorough cleansing of the colon. Then a monthly maintenance treatment is suggested to keep the colon cleaned and toned.

Maintenance program:Drink water, half your weight in fluid ounces daily; not with meals, but either one to one and a half hours before meals or two hours after meals. Learn proper food combinations for your body. They should be fresh, organic, in season, from your local area.

Reduce stress and tension by exercising and getting the proper amount of sleep. Take time in nature. Respond to your bowel needs promptly.
